WOOF. is the musical project of New Jersey based song writer Kelan Bonislawski. After years of obtaining and playing around on various instruments, Kelan realised he had enough instruments to cover the sound of a full band, only no bandmates. This forced him to record each part on his own from his makeshift living room studio. This developed into a collage of sounds, from Beck esk lo-fi funk, to early 00's indie rock, occasionally losing itself in dense psychedelic space. WOOF. recently signed with Tree Machine Records (check them out!), a Bloomington - Indiana based label, which plan on releasing an EP with WOOF. with preparations for a full length LP in the Spring or Fall.
Here I play a little game with Kelan aka WOOF. A game of 20 questions to get to know him and his music a little more. Check out the interview below:
1) FAVOURITE ALBUM OF 2014?
I wasn’t caught up with most of the music that came out in 2014., but I did get St. Vincent’s album and listened to that many times. Sukierae by Jeff Tweedy and his kid was pretty cool too.
2) WORST ALBUM OF 2014?
I love Weird Al, let that be known, but I probably listened to his new album more than any others because my four year old daughter loves it. I had already had enough of Pharrell’s “Happy” by the time “Tacky” came out, yet listened to it everyday at her command. Great album, but I can’t listen to it anymore.
Agreed, the 'Happy' era has ended... hopefully!
3) BIGGEST MUSICAL INFLUENCE?
Beck has always inspired me. I love musicians that are constantly reinventing their sound and not grasping onto whatever style made them successful. I appreciate an album that takes a risk and deviates from what’s probably expected of them. Kevin Barnes is another one of those guys. And of course The Beatles, Bowie, Byrne, that stuff.
4) IDEA BEHIND THE NAME WOOF. ?
Initially, I just liked the look and sound of the word. Plus everyone can easily pronounce it, unlike my full name. But now, I like thinking of the word like, a dog trying to communicate with someone, and the listener attaching or projecting their own meanings to what is really being said due to the language barrier, much like a song. How’s that?
Perfect explanation! And nice idea behind it. We like the name WOOF.
5) DREAM COLLABORATION? (Can be a fellow singer, songwriter or producer)
Dan Deacon. I want to find out how his magic works.
6) YOUR MUSICAL STYLE IN 3 WORDS...?
Post-Office-Pop... We like the sound of this!
7) PERFECT ROAD TRIP?
Anywhere. We just got a Suburu Forrester with a back up camera (opted out of the sunroof though, bad decision). Ready to back that baby up into the American landscape…but I really do want to just drive around the east coast. I’ve been living in Jersey the past 5 years and haven’t strayed too far from my area yet.
American road trip is on our bucket list too!
8) DO YOU HAVE ANY NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS FOR 2015?
I just want to be the best dad I can be and try to make better music.
9) DREAM MUSICAL VENUE YOU COULD PLAY ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD?
A Blogotheque street walk, banging on street lamps and confusing strangers along the way.
10) FAVOURITE COUNTRY YOU HAVE VISITED?
Haven’t left the US in over 10 years, but when I was a kid, I visited London and Paris with my family, and have vague, but warm memories of it there. I didn’t appreciate it as much then as I would now. I’d like to go back.
11) FAVOURITE COUNTRY YOU WISH TO VISIT?
Japan is somewhere I feel I need to go sometime in my life. Tokyo specifically. I want to experience the culture shock and feel what it’s like to not understand your surroundings. I want to see the world from a new perspective.
Yes! I think Japan should be on everyones agenda! One of those places you need to visit.
12) DOGS OR CATS?
Cats. you have to earn their time and acceptance. Once you’ve gained the approval of a cat, you’ve made it in life.
We're cat people too....
13) YOU CAN HAVE ONE SUPER POWER, WHAT WOULD IT BE & WHY?
The power to naturally sleep a good eight hours a night.
14) CAREER GOAL?
Find a career.
15) IF YOU COULD GO TO ANY CONCERT PAST OR PRESENT WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Any GG Allin show, given that I’m a safe distance from the stage, the crowd, and the venue.
16) IF YOU COULD HAVE WROTE ANY SONG, EVER, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
The Happy Birthday song makes about $5,000 a day…
Seriously?!! Lucky guy who came up with that!
17) LAST SONG YOU LISTENED TO?
I was just listening to Frank Ocean’s “Pink Matter” on my home from work. It’s perfect.
LOVE Frank Ocean! Superb taste & Pink Matter is a class track.
18) LAST FILM YOU WATCHED?
Birman, and it blew my mind. Halfway through watching it I decided it’s already one of my favourite movies of all time. Have to watch it another few times now.
Yeah it is one my agenda as one of those films I need to see!
20) FAVOURITE SONG OF YOURS YOU LIKE TO PERFORM LIVE?
Haven’t played any of my songs live yet. I guess that’s the next step here.
20) PLAN FOR 2015?
No plans other than to keep recording and try to make each one better than the last. And to release another album.
We look forward to it :) !!
